A College Mystery: The Story of the Apparition in the Fellows' Garden at Christ's College, Cambridge by A P Baker.

With five drawings of Christ's College, Cambridge by F H Round

First edition, second printing published in 1923 by W Heffer and Sons Ltd, Cambridge.

Slender volume, 76pp, with publisher's original blue cloth the gilt stamped crest and titles to the upper board and spine. A sharp, fine copy, square corners, the cloth is very bright and clean as is the gilt stamping, some light fading to the spine titles only. Small gift inscription label pasted to the ffep, some very light foxing here and there, otherwise the book is very tight and crisp. The illustrations by F H Round are wonderfully atmospheric, depicting shadowy figures around the grounds of Cambridge University. One inparticular evokes the seminal ghost story 'The Mezzotint' by his friend and colleague M R James, who is thanked by the author in the preface of the book for having read over the manuscript.

A collection of ghost stories which are apparently fictionalised accounts of true stories of spectral visitations to the college. I can't imagine any books which more wholly evoke M R James's world, you can almost smell the polished oak panelling.
