* The Devils Own was written by Norah Lofts under the pseudonym Peter Curtis. It is a little known Folk Horror gem which tells the story of teacher who moves to a village school in the idyllic English countryside. The dust-jacket blurb goes onto say 'soon the dream quickly turns to nightmare...beneath the smiling face of the village green there lay the evil grimace of an ancient wickedness; of an old, blasphemous and supposedly forgotton cult.'Occult practice, human sacrifice and other Folk Horror tropes abound. The book was adapted by Nigel Kneale for the 1966 Hammer Film production THE WITCHES starring Joan Fontaine. It was later published under Lofts real name as 'The Little Wax Doll'. A scarce and overlooked title with a superb dust-jacket.
