First edition, first printing (undated) published in 1934 by Hutchinson & Co. 328pp + publisher's catalogue bound in at the rear. It's a very good copy considering the lack of dustjacket, publisher's original red cloth with black stamped titles to the upper board and spine. Light rubbing to the corners and spine tips, the cloth has light age soiling but retains excellent colour, the titles are bold. The original 'mapped' endpapers designed by the author and his wife Joan are quite superb, uniform, light toning to ep's and pages throughout, the block has some light soiling and one or two marks. Inscribed to the title page by the author.
Without a doubt, Wheatley's masterpiece and one of the most important novels ever written on black magic. It was of course adapted for film by Hammer Studios in 1968, the screenplay being written by Richard Matheson (I am Legend) and starring Christopher Lee as the Duc de Richleau and Charles Gray as 'Mocata'. This first printing is extremely scarce, especially for being signed by the author. A genre cornerstone, listed in all major genre bibliographies.
