The Lancashire Witches: 'A Romance of Pendle Forest' by William Harrison AinsworthUndated, published c1919 by Herbert Jenkins, Ltd, London.Condition: Book: Vg, 376pp. original green cloth with black titles, the cloth is bright and clean, spine has dulled a shade with a small stain to the upper spine tip, pages are uniformly toned/browned as is usual with this cheap paper stock, a couple of small chips to the ffep.Jacket: Good- It is this scarce jacket which makes this edition such a joy. The jacket is worn and has chips and small loss around the spine tips and hinge corners, other chipping along the edges and a few small tears along the hinge lengths but is very much in one piece, priced at 2/- Scarce in the superb dust jacket.The front panel blurb of the jacket has added the header 'A Story of the Black Art' and depicts a witch carrying off a virginal maiden in a white night gown over the Pendle Forest.The rear panel carries the header 'The Evil Eye' and depicts a silhouette of two witches around a cauldron. It reads: " In Harrison Ainsworth's striking romance of old Lancashire there is all the Black Art that the most vivid mind can possibly desire: witches, white owls, black cats, broomsticks with an appropriate tang of brimstone"
