First UK edition, first printing published in 1894 by T Fisher Unwin.
Rather scarce volume and part of Unwin's 'Autonym Library'. Vg, 189pp, seldom seen in the publisher's original oatmeal cloth with blue stamped designs and titles, unusual oblong shape with rough-cut text block, gilted to the top edge. Rubbing to the corners, bottom right corner has a knock, light wear to te spine tips otherwise the boards are clean and looking well, the slim spine is also fully intact which is unusual, many copies of this book ended up being re-bound. Some foxing/toning to the endpapers otherwise a very clean and tightly bound copy. Scarce in any condition, this is the only copy currently being offered in the original binding.
*The Upper Berth is a masterpiece, one of the finest short ghost stories ever written and is perhaps one of the most re-printed in horror anthologies. This volume also includes the ghost story 'By the Waters of Paradise'
